Several lakes in Colorado have them. They are often known in other states as hybrid striped bass. Do a google search and you'll find a ton of info I am sure.

New Castle was planted with them and they are in there. I had a friend fish there last year with a few little ones being caught.

No Wiper were stocked last year because of a problem with the hatchery.
This year there will be Wiper stocked in Willard Bay.
This was verified by a DWR Biologest that I trust.

just a clarification: no wipers were stocked in Willard Bay last year...however, 8000 wipers were stocked into Newcastle.

Also, FWIW, spring gillnetting has been completed at Newcastle already this year and good numbers of nice wipers are swimming the waters and preying on golden shiners.

Now that is a football. I may have to try to get up there and catch a few this year as I have heard the pull real hard but I have never caught one.

[#000000]They ARE going to do something with it. Dale stated in a post above these that they Will be stocking it this year. BTW, there are still alot of fat wipers in there. I saw some pics from a good friend from last week holding up 4 huge fatties. We just need some warmer and stable weather.[Wink][/#000000]

[#500050]Thanks for the info, I need to clarify, It's a Shame-The water level dike area, It will be nice to have good water some time soon, and have them stocked with wiper this year, just looked at the web site and they have not stocked it yet for this year, hope they do soon, And thanks Old_Coot on the corection [unsure]Wyper - Wiper correct SP. [/#500050]
[#500050]Also from what I read, I thought Newcastle was in NV, after closer look, it is C-Utah, I can handle a trip to that area, it might be fun to get out and try different places.[Image: fish-on.gif][/#500050]

Nice wipers W&B did you get a tape measure on any of them? They look to be 18 to 20 inches, is that about right? Thanks for posting the pictures.

Not saying your information is incorrect, but when I called the DWR in Salt Lake City a few weeks back to talk about Willard stocking, I was told that indeed there was a problem with the hatchery last year. But, they still stocked Willard last year with somewhat less than the normal number of wipers.[crazy]

The stocking numbers for a normal year for Willard is in the neighborhood of 500,000 fish in the 2 to 3 inch range. This is, and has been, done each year (except 2007) since the program started one time in the month of July. This year will be no different according to what I was told a month ago.[Image: fish-on.gif]

But I was ALSO told a month ago that the water level would be capped again this year at 4217 feet just like it was last year. That would mean that some run off water will be going into Willard Bay this year to attain that level. Now, somebody on another thread here says that Weber Basin Water told them there would be NO water going into Willard this year. Who are we supposed to believe?[mad] Beats the heck out of me.

I guess we'll all know for sure come September.[Wink]

My guess is that when Weber Basin said no water would be turned into Willard this year, it would mean that there would not be additional water added to fill Willard any higher than last year.
Water will flow in and out, but the Bay will not fill any higher.
That would make sense to me.

[#500050]WOW [crazy] 500,000 wiper planted in Willard, except for 2007, that is alot of fish[sly], It is hard to believe there is that many in willard, (I am not saying your information is wrong) And I know that many is not caught every year, I guess they get eaten or die off. Glad to here the good news about them planting this year.[Image: fish-on.gif][/#500050]

What you don't know I guess is that those 500,000 are only fry and have only a 2% survival rate[crazy]. So most of them are just bait[unsure].
