New Zealand Fishing
#1
As you in the Northern hemisphere are approaching your winter we are just starting to dust off the big game gear looking forward to a great upcoming season here in New Zealand.
We fish an area known as the Bay of Plenty and the waters surrounding an active marine volcano, White Island.
If you are familiar with the record books then you will see we have World record Yellowtale Kingfish in our waters. These can be captured on anything from Flyrods to Heavy tackle and come in all sizes.
If you decide to head "Downunder" for a vacation or fishing holiday then look us up.

Hi Steve
thanks for your reply
the answer is yes to both although we dont work the puka to hard, as you can see from my website we mainly chase the kingfish and terikihi at White Island.
I am very keen on chasing some Broadbill this year. I saw a number of them on the surface last summer and have been shown a couple of spots by a commercial longliner. Last year I only managed one drift and got a number of Rays bream, this year will be different and you can obviously cover a lot more ground by trolling.
The problem is for us to find the time to do it ourselves first or find some charters who are prepared to take the risk.
Your obviously a kiwi?
regards
Phil

Hi LBG
If your from Wellington as I was then anything would be good.
Ive only been in 1 hour from a trip and have to say we had a hard day, a storm is just knocking on the door so may have to flag tommorrows trip.
The inshore terikihi had been excellent but has really petered off in the last week as the water temps increase each day, 15.4 deg c today, the water colour is changing daily as well.
some snapper are being caught by some one through the grapevine but we havnt found them yet, Im sure the next few weeks will really tell. plenty of small ones though.
the tuna (fingers crossed) shouldnt be to far away and a couple of 20 kg Albacore were landed today
regards phil

I am an Aussie Phil and based in Brisbane Qld.

Have an ongoing interest in night time trolling for Broadbill and Swordfish, plus other game angling aspects.

Glad to hear the Kingies are keepiing up their good form. Do you jig, bait or both for them locally?

Have a mate who runs a boat out of Talago Bay where he spend a lot of time on them as well.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com

Hi steve
some excellent broadbills, pending world records have been capture in new zealand waters recently.
The trend (new here) is one on the downrigger and one bait on the surface. both with lightsticks on the trace above the baits which are tucked inside a softheaded lure, either squid or makeral type baits.

The kingis we have been getting on both live and dead baits and we have been using small arrow squid with some great results. depth only 50 mtrs (150 feet) drifting and at anchor.
Tolaga Bay is also a great spot, I have probably heard of the boat.
cheers phil

Phil

It might be worth telling readers what "terikihi" are given that many NZ fish names will not be familiar to many around here.

Burnin Thumbs!

Steve B
Moderator Lures/Baits Forum
http://www.demonjigs.com
