Person Missing at Willard Bay
#1
I just heard on the news this morning that they are searching for a possible missing fisherman at Willard Bay. From what I understand his vehicle was in one of the parking lots and they found his boat against the shore with no one in it. I just hope everything turns out fine for both him and his family. [:/]

That's scary! I hope everything turns out okay! There hasn't been any real bad weather in the last couple days, it can get scary out there when the wind kicks up!

Very Sad news. Last tv report said the gentleman was about 40 yrs. old -- might rule out a medical problem?

I share the concern of all BFTers and others and hope and pray for a good outcome.

The reason PFD's are a must, especially on Willard,

I was on Willard yesterday and the water was very calm all day ... even glassy sometimes. I can't imagine the accindent being anythig related to weather. My guess, is he must have fallen out of his boat some how and not been able to get back in before faigue or hypothermia set in. The water temps yesterday were 54°. Yea, possibly a heart attack or stroke or something.

Whatever it was, that is just terable news.

Hopefully he beached his boat to use the restroom and when he got back his boat had drifted away, then he just got lost hiking back to the marina...

It is perplexing in the least. The conditions were all wrong for this type of accident. We can only hope.....[:/]

I fish and hunt alone way too much. Four or five trips to Montana for a week or so elk hunting solo, trip to Lake Powell for a week solo. Several years ago when I drew my LE premium elk tag I spent several weeks hunting different areas solo hunting the different hunts. Probably not a good Idea but at times it's hard to find people to go on the different trips I do. One can only hope for the best for this gentleman.

I've been soloing as well as of late due to the guy I used to go with has a new interest in flying and has been working on a gyro. He now wishes he didn't go that route but is seeing it through to the end. He hopes to be back fishing later this summer.

There's a whole lot of drownings and accidents every year in the US from not going to shore to use the restroom, but instead using the one over the side of the boat. Don't know what happened here, but just sayin'.

It sure reads like the classic but tragic "pee over the side" accident. Guy tries to take a whiz, stands as close as possible to the gunnel, and loses his balance. Splash. Boat scoots away, no PFD, cold water, and...

I could see hitting the Island that is not marked at all and being pitched from your small boat. Buoys need to be placed on structure that is absolutely a hazard.
I've expected the deployment of marker buoys for the last 4 weeks as summer approaches and the go fast crowd arrives, the water should be made safe as soon as the Ice comes off. No benefit comes from waiting when it comes to marking structure that causes a serious safety concern.

I have been out around "the island" several times in the last week. It is currently only about a foot under water right now. If he ran aground and fell out, he could have easily stood up and climbed back in his boat.

By the way, not only is the island marked, it has THREE buoys on it!

Jim makes a very good point about peeing over the side. I used to do that but since I now have a wide mouth picture to pee in, it is MUCH safer and less scary.

If it has 3 buoys today that means it only went for a month or more with no buoys. I'll repeat that nothing is gained by waiting to mark safety hazards, structure should be marked at Ice off.

"....over the side" is not an issue for us of the older (ancient) generation cuz we can't make it over the side. When all you have to work with is a semi-defective on-off valve that works on a simple principle of gravity... over the side is not doable.... unless you happen to have a.... well, never mind, I won't go there. Solution: a pee bucket.

I have had near overboard falls while attempting to lower my electric. I usually power out to where I want to fish, shut down, and then walk to the front of the boat to lower the electric. Now I get on hands and knees and crawl to the front of the boat to lower the electric and then crawl back to the safety of my seat.

Another risky time comes when lowering and raising anchors.

We all need to think safety first -- always.

Still hoping for the best in this Sad happening at Willard.

One on the bow for easy removal:

One on the stern in the same manner:

They're FREE! They also fulfill the safety requirement:
BAILING DEVICE
All boats, not of a self-bailing design, must have a bail bucket or mechanical means for pumping the bilge. It is always a good idea to have a bail bucket. If the battery dies, the bilge pump will not work.

This may or may not have been what happened to the missing boater, but maybe some can use this as a positive reminder to be a little over-cautious. We all need to wear our life jackets more.

If the missing man went looking for a bathroom at Willard he could still be looking. All the ones I tried on Saturday were closed!

The pee bucket is a great idea.

I just got an inflatable PFD this year and wear it all the time. I fish alone most the time and if a guy fell out trolling especially at 3mph he wouldn't stand a chance.

Hey Ralph, could you post a pitcher of that wide mouth picture? LOL!

I wear an inflatable PFD at all times. I also have a hole in the bottom of my kayak to pee through. Really.

Doing a follow up on this incident at Willard, if the truck was in the lot then they should have run a plate # on the truck and should have an idea of who it is,,, there is a lot of BFT that fish Willard, I supposed that someone from this sight might have clues as to who it might be, of course we do not want to guess and letting the family know first is the best thing to do. As to falling over board, a thought could be when he fell overboard the prop could have hit him. I went overboard once while at Rock Port, went to turn the boat around and the seat come off the brackets, and I fell into the water, lucky for me I had someone else with me at the time and he stopped the boat, I was using the big motor to troll with.. As I held on the side of the boat my feet almost got in the prop….

I really hope they find out what happened, to have the trolling motor still going tells me he went overboard while the boat was moving. While peeing or some other reason. Like Old Coot said I carry a bottle with me..I hope and pray for the best in this turn of events. [fishin]
