Hooked on Utah
#1
Did anyone watch Hooked on Utah last night??
I heard they where fishing the Boulders....
I am headed down that way next week and was curious what lakes they fished on the program.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they close off the majority of boulder mountain lakes this week?

[#0000FF]I watched it. Gary was with a guide and was very careful to avoid mentioning the name of the lake they were fishing. Those who know the lakes better than I do probably recognized where they were.

But they sure caught some purty brookies. Lost count of the number of times I had to listen to "Fish on...baybeee".

it was VERY ironic to me that they said:

"there are no secrets on Boulder Mountain. This lake is known and fished by a lot of anglers..."

but then they were very careful to NOT mention the name of the lake.

That show kind of bugged me. It just screamed: me! me! me! me! I'm wonderful!

[#0000FF]Perzackly. Don't know how many of Gary's shows you have watched but that is a "pattern of practice". Even worse when his wife is a part of a show.

I would guess that you were probably happy that they didn't name names...of the lakes. But part of what they said is true. There are plenty of folks who are familiar with the area and know many of the lakes well. However, you can lead an angler to water but you can't help him catch fish...if he is an "average" dimbulb who does not know the proper lures/flies or presentation techniques. Most folks can score a few of the smaller fish but it usually takes some skill and knowledge to consistently hook the bigger ones.

If you turn the sound off on Gary's programs you can still enjoy the fish porn.

Dude -- just opposite. I really bugged me that they said "there are no secrets" but then would not say the name of the lake! If there aren't any secrets, then why not revel where you are fishing? They should have.

As for leading anglers to water...
...watch that show again. What you'll see is that the brook trout are piled up on the spring. They only fished 1 single spot on that lake. They were fishing those vulnerable fish that were packed in on the spring beginning to spawn. Talk about fishing for fish in a barrel!! Any dimbulb could have caught those fish! That was yet another source of annoyance for me with that show -- the arrogance displayed by both the host and guide. Arrogance in catching fish in a barrel!

I haven't watched Hooked on Utah for a very long time. I just happened to see the teaser and decided to watch it. I wish I wouldn't have. It's those types of shows that give all of us anglers that "snob" stereotype.

On the other hand, I was deeply Saddened while watching Adam Eakle on KSL Outdoors to hear about John Weis. My heart goes out to John. Gary could learn a thing or two from watching Adam's show. It's not always about catching the biggest or the most fish.

OK, I'll correct you.

While this was a regulation for a number of years, this rule is no longer in place. According to the 2015 rules and regulations:

Boulder Mountain lakes and reservoirs
Garfield and Wayne counties
See specific water restrictions for
individual waters
. Statewide regulations
apply to those waters not specifically
identified

Waters identified:
Fish Creek Reservoir
Beaver Dam Reservoir
Bullberry Lakes
Dougherty Basin
Honeymoon
Long Willow Bottom
McGath (hint, hint)
Pacer Lake
Pine Creek Reservoir
Round Willow Bottom
Oak Creek Reservoir
Scout Lake
Solitaire

Each of those lakes above has some special regulation, which may include seasonal closures. Check the regs before you go.

All other lakes on the Boulder have general regs.

+1 PBH I have now seen 3 shows with Gary and his guide from Fremont river guide service, and I,m not impressed, they have fished two lakes on the Boulder and both have fish stacked to spawn on springs or creeks entering the lake, anyone with a little fly fishing knowledge can do just what they did. Oh and the other show they did so well on was private water on the Fremont river. (Now that would be really hard to catch fish that don't get any pressure at all)[Wink]

That show and the host irritate me for the same reason.

I like "The Hole" there much better than the snag-fest spring. Too shallow and too easy to accidentally hook one...

If you dont like Hooked on Utah, I have a really simple solution for you, DONT WATCH IT! Dont come on here pissing and moaning about it. Even some of the geriatrics that frequent this site could grow up a little.

I mistakenly thought this was exactly the place to share thoughts on fishing, fishing shows, fishing products and any fishing related subject.
Should change the name from BigFishTackle to Don't Express Your Views here web site.

That's exactly the conclusion that I came to after watching it.

I wonder what might happen if more and more people come to the same conclusion? Maybe the host should take some of these comments to heart and utilize them to better his show and increase his following?

or, he can just continue to alienate the very crowd he's trying to cater to. Sounds like a good business plan to me.

Cry harder, Berg. Those dingleberries over at the GP are missing their idiot, it seems.

As for "Hooked on Utah," I wouldn't wipe my butt with that guy. I wish I had a nickel for every time I heard the word "Awesome!" slip off his annoying lips. I'd have a crap load of nickels.

Maybe he doesn't need to. As of yesterday, it looks like Mr. Winterton has a new career.

I bet it's reassuring that Gary the TV show host isn't in politics.
