Is this good for backing a spinning reel?
#1
Hello Folks,

I've ordered an Okuma Trio-55S spinning reel and am considering how to spool the line. What I would call a medium to medium heavy freshwater spinning reel. This will be used for bass in north central Illinois.

I'm thinking of starting with an inexpensive 30lb. mono to mostly fill the reel. Then about 50 yards of 20lb. Sufix 832. Then a fluorocarbon or mono leader to suit the situation.

How does this sound?

I'm thinking of using an Albright knot for both connections.

I would go with a smaller diameter line as backing - say15 lb - so it lays smooth and even. I like Suffix, but 50 yards?! Consider loading the longest casting distance you'll make and add 5'-10'. This way when you have to change line, you won't be cutting off that much.

A 2-3' leader is what I always use, which is smaller in diameter than the main line and suited to the lures I casting. The lighter the lure the smaller the line diameter.

Braid is also a good main line due to zero stretch for long distance hook sets.

Uni-to-Uni knot to join lines (4 twists around the circle) - easiest to tie, far less line wasted and never comes loose; uni-to-lure is the only knot I use regardless of lure or hook to be attached.

Thanks for the advice SenkoSam,

That all sounds reasonable. I've always been real cheap and try to save money. But, I will consider the braid as a backing since I probably won't have to replace it for years.

Until recently, I've used the Uni-knot almost exclusively for 50 years since it became popular in the 1960's. I thought it would have too flat a face on both ends but, not as much so as other knots. I'll have to give it a try.
