Regarding that picture of pole fishing, I suspect it is a poor country and people generally seem to think of pole fishing as making due with less usually by limitations of means.
But, there is another pole fishing that has intrigued me as it's using the technique for actual advantages as in this video where speed and efficiency in tuna fishing is surprising:
