There are a couple good books out there for making cast nets. I bought one as well, however, the best source of information is youtube. There are some really good (and really poor) videos on how to tie up a net.
fishing braid will work very well, you just need enough of it. You need to tie a modified net knot (sheet bend) for the knot to hold with braid. It will require one or two extra loops when you tie it up. That is my understanding anyhow.
That sounds like an interesting project to make a coiling crab trap that stores smaller.
