March Ice fishing Trip - Lunker Tiger Trout!
#1
I know this is a little late, but I wanted to share a great experience.

Back in March, we made a final ice fishing trip at a lake full of Kokanee Salmon. My friend Matt had been there previously and had caught his limit and invited us to go with him.

The trip would require some snow shoes to walk down the face of the dam and out onto the lake which was covered in about 2 feet of snow with a layer of slush above the ice. So we dusted off a couple old homemade snowshoes I have been storing for 15 years, packed our lonely rarely used ice fishing gear and got up early in the morning to meet up with Matt.

My son, Jaron, said he would go, so I stopped by his apartment to pick him up that morning, and it took a while to wake him up and get him going. I about left him there. (Jaron is now serving in the Air Force and this was the last fishing trip we could have together since he was leaving for basic training in April).

Anyhow the drive was beautiful and so was the weather. When we got to the lake we strapped on our snow shoes and hiked down to the lake.

Matt was 10 minutes ahead of us. He was already fishing and had caught a nice Kokanee by the time we made it there and were getting our holes dug.

Jaron caught one salmon and then a few short minutes later he hooked into something unexpected. A really heavy fish. It took out line several times. We both coached Jaron on not horsing it in to fast and letting it play itself out and 9 minutes 35 second late he landed the beast. A 25 inch, 7 pound tiger trout! I was so happy that Jaron was the one to catch it. I have caught so many fish in my life. Big 60+ pound king salmon, silver salmon, hundreds of red salmon, 100 pound halibut, etc. I am still hunting for a 24 inch rainbow and a slot buster cut throat. But I was glad it was Jaron who hooked it and landed it all by himself.

We fished for another couple hours and filled our limit with 7 more Kokanee, all the time hoping to hook another big tiger.

The weather was absolutely perfect. No wind, sunny with a few clouds. We ended up shedding some layers and my shoe dried out mostly. The company was great, with my son, Jaron, and my friend, and fishing buddy, Matt.

We will definitely be going back there next year! Here is a link to the video I finally got around to editing. Enjoy!
