Crawlers are used alot by myself, and my fishing buddies. Wow, looking back, I can't even begin to count the numbers of fish that have taken crawlers.
I use them whole on spinner rigs in current, or drifting on Lindy rigs in lakes. The drift application works great with a bottom bouncer. Usually when I hook them for these applications, I hook it right through the tip of the head with the first hook for max action. If there are other hooks on the rig, I just space them so the crawler can move with minimum restriction. If a fish bites the tail off, just move the lowest hook up a bit, and cast it out again. A worm blower does work good.
I've balled them up on a hook for cats, leaving the ends dangling out for effect. I've used small chunks of them on jigs. Throw out a floating jig with a half of crawler on it. Put a sinker about a foot from it so it stays near the bottom.
The crawler is a bait that sits right next to the good old angle worm. If it's warm, I'm never out on the water without them.
