Big Wood River - June 9th, 2004

FISHING: Fair
Big Wood River
The Wood has been on the rise and fishing is tricky right now; weighted nymphs and a few streamers will take fish. There is still some more upper elevation snow left; another good session of warm days and nights will see peak runoff. Once the river crests and subsides, fishing will be as good as it gets. We expect to see some Green Drakes beginning to show by the third week in June.

Synopsis
The Brown Drakes made a strong showing last week and have dwindled since the weekend; however, expect some activity to continue on warm, calm nights. The Big Lost and its tributaries, The Big Wood, and Little Wood are fishable, but are still susceptible to runoff. Silver Creek is the best option in the valley with Baetis, PMD's and some Brown Drake activity keeping things interesting.

Warm Springs/Trail Creek
These tight, willow choked streams are running high and difficult to access. Your efforts will be better spent on other waters; don't forget about Dollar Lake and Lake Creek Lake if you're looking for a few hours of fishing adventures with the kids.

Dollar/Penny and Lake Creek Lakes
These waters have recently been stocked and are great destinations for beginners and kids. Try stripping nymphs and streamers through the water; prince nymphs, pheasant tails, and wooly buggers.

Conservation
The Wood River Land Trust is a non profit organization committed to conserving and restoring the Sun Valley area’s open lands, wildlife habitat, and recreational accesses. Some of the Land Trust’s successes include preservation of several local fishing access points along the Big Wood River including the Boxcar Bend Preserve (mid-valley), Cedar Bend Preserve (Hailey) and the Howard Preserve (Bellevue). We invite you to visit their website - [#0000ff]Wood River Land Trust[/#0000ff] to learn more about their local efforts and sign up for their newsletter.
