Cool, when I learned the "Y" connection, I was told it was called the "double tippet or twin tag" off a surgeon's. I've never had to worry about intentionally making both tag ends different sizes - it seems to naturally happen that way(I'm not terribly gifted when it comes to making all my knots using exactly the same amount of line). I was shown that method a number of years ago and ever since then, I've not used the other dropper techniques because they do tend to tangle more often on me at times.
I'm not sure about your explaination of the surgeon's loop for tying on your flies though. It's probably my reading comprehension skills - not your description. I just can't seem to wrap a nostril around it right now - I'll have to go get my stuff out and give it a whirl or two and see if I can make it make some more sense to me.
