Lake Trout Fishing with Capt Jim Williams of Creative Fishing
#32
All I can say is WOW. I went with Jim for the sole purpose of learning how to catch bigger fish jigging, more consistantly then I have in the past. I can catch them trolling steel, but what fun is that? Once their hooked it's just a matter of cranking them in. It's steel line for gods sake, it's not like your going to break them off.
I learned that my presentation sucked, my hook set sucked and pretty much everything I did sucked. The reason I caught more fish the first day then the second is because I was wore out. I missed at least 7 fish Sunday and only 2 on Saturday. I accomplished what I set out to do, learn. I'm definetly headed back this spring with BLM if we can get an open date. I will go again this year too with my son when he can get some time off.
I recommend Jim to anyone that want's to fish the Gorge, wants to learn something and can take some criticism. Jim corrected me on things I was doing wrong. He didn't yell or cuss me, he simply pointed out that I was scaring the fish by not doing what he told me to do. I made a mistake in the presentation and no kidding you could see the fish haul butt on the fish finder. One mistake is all it took to blow it.
Noted author and guide Tred Barta said years ago that "Nothing new and inventive changes fishing tatics year to year". "The Best and Worst of Tred Barta, Miami press, 1990" "The successful guys are the ones that do it better then everyone else." I didn't agree with him until now. I plan on working on my hook set technique and presentation this winter and see if things change this spring. I'm sure they will.
Thanks Jim and I'll see you again soon.
