Coeur d'Alene Pike
#5
This time of year (early spring) 99% of the pike are going to be caught on 'dead bait' such as herring, smelt or another form of dead fish. People either put these below a bobber just off the bottom or lay them right on the bottom.
As soon as the water heats up a little the Pike will become more active and that is when it is really fun to go after them. That is when you throw lures such as spinner baits, husky jerks, spoons, etc. My favorite is Longfeather Lure's Orange and Orange spinner bait. They are available at Fins and Feathers, Black Sheep, and a few other sporting good stores around. If you can't find them let me know and I can get you some. These spinner baits are hand tied by a local here in Rathdrum, Idaho.
In the fall it is a lot of the same for the summer except for around the time of duck season and that is when we throw a lot of very large lures for Pike. This is because the pike are feeding up for the winter and if you really want to catch a BIG pike this is the time of year to do it ona lure. Some of the lures we throw can be 10 inches long so when you hook into a big fish get ready and hold on. If you are new to the area I would suggest letting one or our guides, or someone elses guide, take you out and really get you into the fish. That time of year is also a beautiful time of year to be on the water, just a added perk.
