My last fishing trip in early June turned out to be a learning experience.Spanish mackerel were present in the water,but they were unusually finicky probably because of the heat or the water clarity or both. Everyone who was lined up was throwing white 1oz. bullet head jigs with little success, including me.It was a little too windy to use a spoon so I raided my kit and settled on a pilchard jig with mylar inserts and a smaller hook for a more natural profile. I caught 4 spanish in 30 mins. before i lost my jig to a jack crevalle. the next best fisherman took 1 hr. and 30 mins for his 3 spanish. i think the sparkle and the ease at which the jig moved through the water made the difference. It just goes to show that having fish present doesn't mean you'll catch.You have to give them what they want also. i now try to have more variety in my tackle colection and i have ordered more pilchard jigs.<br><br>
