I am facing the same situation. Young kids and equipment. I started out with a spinning reel and never used anything else. After many years I have graduted to the biat caster. I almost have it down. I still havent used a closed face reel like the ones we are talking about here. As for my kids,

I think my three year old likes his casting reel for ice fishing. I figure I will start him off with a spinning reel when it comes to casting and for trolling and ice fishing he can get accustomed to the bait caster then when hes ready he can choose what he likes. Hes only three so it may be a while before he chooses.
