Lefty Kreh does a lot of salt water fly fishing instruction where there are not obsticles behind you.
last year I took a casting class taught by Doug Swisher's son (can't remember his name, I think it is Randy) who is a certified FFF instructor and champion caster. I talked to him about having trouble shooting line on the backward haul. He watched me make some casts and then demonstrated how if I lowered the rod way past the 11 o'clock postion the line can shoot easier through the guides. He also demonstrated that a longer strokes were required for really long casts. It is something you would not be able to do with abstructions behind you. We were casting on a football field. There definitely no obstructions within MY casting range
The old 11 to 2 positions are some good guide lines but there are situations where it is not the best technique to use.
Here I am talking like I am an expert and that is far from the trueth.
