Do artificial smells on your fly turn fish off?

I wonder why the bait & spin casting group doesn't seem to have a problem with various odors messing up their lures. I have seen people out at the lake catching fish while eating spicy foods, drinking beer, smoking etc. Maybe a combination of smells is an attractant itself. Yea right.[/size][/green][/font]
