Rod Lengths Used Fishing From Pontoon Boat
#33
Mac, remember, a fly rod GUIDES are much smaller than a spinning rods and vise versa. The reason I never cared for the combos is they were built around the spinning idea with larger guides, shorter and much stiffer rod. They just don't cast a fly line like they should.
I know we are talking the other direction and mono is a lot thinner than fly line so it should work with ease. Have you considered a cheap fly reel and load it with mono. Because black tape stretches, I would worry about that. I broke a spinning rod reel seat a long time ago and tried the black tape. Nice hot day, it not only made a mess with the glue, but the reel fell off. I resorted to using a hose clamp. I still remember that...WOW
I am not sure what you are thinking on this. Why you need a spinning reel on a fly rod, when you are still using flies.
I see why smallmouth does it. He uses jigs, although I wouldn't want to try casting one with a fly rod unless I had a lot of room and no one to my right. But spinning doesn't require the back cast.
