...thank you for the info.. but bottom line for me is the same question I asked tn2.. if I get an avena float rod and put a fly reel and rig on it.. can I use that as a spey/switch rod from the shores of lakes and use my flies to try to catch fish... ???
:-) ... as anyone here can tell you .. if I have questions I do not hesitate to ask.. :-)

If the Aventa float rod is as soft (read "whippy" or "noodly") as most of the other float rods I've seen then it might make a pretty poor flyrod - or switch rod - or spey rod - for casting a fly line - especially since it is so long. Keep in mind that I've never held one in my hands. They are made with IM-6 graphite, which is a lower modulus (less stiff) material. If you're going to cast a fly line you need something with at least some backbone so the curve doesn't collapse when it is loaded. Rods like the Aventa are made intentionally soft to cushion light mono lines. They flex fully over the length of the rod. Yes, you could cast a fly line with it, but it may be done with a lot of wasted energy and maybe heightened frustration. Could you swat flies with a hammer or drive nails with a fly swatter? Probably, but do you really want to?
No offense intended in any of these words. I may have misunderstood what it is you're actually trying to accomplish. Part of the confusion is with terminology, I suspect. Float rod, switch rod, fly rod, noodle rod, etc. Thinking outside the box (as Smallmouth likes to say) is fun and I like to do it, too. But I also try to keep in mind that sometimes using a rod for something other than what it was intended has lead me to disappointment - and I ended up having to get the thing I was avoiding, after all.
If I were trying to make this decision I would want to have the rod in my hands first, at the very least - and better even to cast it if at all possible - before plopping down my money.
[cool]All this said, MacFly, if you end up going this route and it turns out to be the next great discovery, I want to be first to hear about it. I've been wrong in my assessment before.
