I use drift socks fairly often in big wind to slow down for bottom bouncers. Never had one go side to side. You may have a sock with one pull strap that's shorter than the others.
Drift socks are way better than trolling plates or five gallon buckets. Trolling plates make precise turns impossible and five gallon buckets are hard to pull in and take up too much room in the boat.
