from what I have gathered from other conversations on this forum the word dapping brings two different scenarios to a fishermans mind..
1. tradtional dapping as originally used in Scotland and Ireland is more the "[size 4][#008000][font "Garamond"]To skip or bounce, especially over the surface of water. [/font][/#008000][/size]"..
this is where the long pole with the dapping floss come in.. as the idea is to let the fly skip across the water.. not dip into the water.. the dapping floss and the wind does most of the work for you..
2. here in the states the term dapping is more the
"[size 4][#008000][font "Garamond"]To fish by letting a baited hook fall gently onto the water.

[size 4][#008000][font "Garamond"]To dip lightly or quickly into water, as a bird does. [/font][/#008000][/size]"
in this case.. from what I understand.. the fisher tends to be in a more stealth mode.. letting the fly.. or bait.. jbreak the surface of the water and down an inch or so.. or teasing the surface of the water by slowly.. gently bobbing the fly/bait up and down .. I say stealth because most times I have seen anyone talk about it they have a fish.. are usually on the shore.. in bushes and trees.. and just maneuvering the fly down to the fish without startling it..
as for you question of is dapping fly fishing.. that goes back to the definition of fly fishing.. and its interpretation..
is fly fishing defined as fishing with an artificial "fly".. and therefore the rod used makes no difference.. or..
is fly fishing defined as fishing with an artificial "fly" and fly rod.. and fly reel.. ??
I tend to think it is the using of the fly.. more the the use of the fly rod and reel.. if not then why would fishers use a dapping rig.. or bubble fly rig???
