I have a white river #8, it is manufactured in china, it is a store brand used by both cabela's and bass pro...
I do like it, but would never intentionaly put it up against a salmon.
I did pull in a 42 lb carp with it and took second place for biggest carp caugh in michigan for the year I caught it.. an hour and a half of waring and I thought was going to snap the rod, I couldnt count the number of times I was reeled by the carp.
I kid you not, salmon pound for pound will put greater strein on your rod than any carp will, Carp are like freight trains, when they take their runs and if they dont hit the end of the line nothing will break, and they dont go far. Salmon when they run they wont nessisarily stop any time soon, they can head to tinbuck2 and not bat an eye. you have to fight the salmon from running where as a carp you let it run and it wont go far before you start picking up the line again.
an #8 is a good all around weight to target the majority of species from gills perch on up,
when you start bumping heads with steelies, coho, chinook, and espicaily those atlantic kings wich reach up to 50 pounds you better have something with some back bone.
I would suggest a #12, you can always put smaller line on it, Watch the garage sales for smaller in expencive reels for light line. I would suggest you get the best rod a 100 bucks will get you. then save up a couple bucks around at least 50 to pick up a bigger reel for salmon, you need something that will have room for plenty of Backer line.
I dont know where you are located, but I am asuming you are looking at north west, new england or great lakes area where salmond fishing is just plain fenominal.
the up side to getting a #12 is if you ever decide to go to the golf you can take this baby with you and target tarpon. [cool]
