ya i see where you're coming from. it's just like fishing. people can say that you are killing fish for no reason too. It's just a sport that has something to do with killing animals. It really doesnt hurt the population. in fact, it probably helps it in the fact that that certain species doesnt become over-populated. however, a population can be over hunted or over fished, but that is a different story.
