Perch Posse at Bunny Gulch 8-11-09
#1
[cool]Headed to Starvation this morning with fellow tuber LloydE and tooners Wildcat94 and Hnaf. Surprised to find water still only 1 foot down from max high water. Water temp 64 at 7:30 launch and only 1 degree warmer at 2 PM takeout. Constant breezes from all directions.

It was a first time on Starvation for both Wildcat94 and Hnaf. Furthermore, Hnaf had never caught either perch or walleye. We took care of that.

Took a while to find any fish. WC94 scored the first fish...a small smallie. He also got a nice 14 incher later in the day. Lots of toad perch but no walleyes.

Lloyd did his steady and focused routine and caught a grundle of small perch, along with enough large ones to keep a limit. Also one small wallie. Only problem was he had an "equipment malfunction" About half of his large perch escaped from his basket while he was being towed in by Wildcat94 and his basket was horizontal. Houdini perch. Lloyd the conservationist.

Hnaf had never fished much for anything besides trout and some Utah Lake species. But, he caught on to the routine pretty well and scored three small walleyes and a limit of perchskis. The custom lures I handed him before launch probably helped.

I continued to work on my new "Fligs" (floating jigs) and also tried some of the new shad grubs like I used to catch a nice big walleye at Utah Lake last week. The fish in Starvation like them too. Got two of my three walleyes today on them as well as some of my biggest perch. Also did well on some big new red glitter ultra minnow jig heads with chartreuse tubes added.

I worked a large area, from shallow to deep, before finally finding a concentration of fish well up in the channel where it remains about 32 feet deep for a long way across the gulch. I found one area where there were a lot of fish marks on my sonar screen and they were very willing. I tossed over the marker buoy and finished off my 20 perch limit with 11" to 13" perch...tossing back a grundle of 9" to 10" fish. Got a severe case of "fish rash" from handling those spiny little devils...and got slashed by the sharp gill plate on a couple of them.

No smallmouth or chubs for me today. But, I did get three small wallies...13, 14 and 15 inchers. Better than zip, but I could stand more rod bending.

Fun trip and the Starvation newbies both caught plenty of perchskis. Probably wouldn't be hard to talk them into going back.
