Tampa Bay Area Fishing Report
#1
Tampa Bay Area
Fishing Report
Captain Charles Walker
10/28/01
Just as the weather got really nice and fishable, the cold front moved in on Friday bringing the winds up to a wonderful 20 kts + and of course the 48 degree morning we had today. Actually the temperature felt great for a change, but now we have to wait for the seas to calm and clean up again. The weather channel is calling for it to warm back up through the week with chances of thunderstorms for next weekend (of course). Oh well, that’s fall for ya.
On to the bait house reports:
Ruskin Bait and Tackle - 813-641-2325 – The drum are biting really well around the bridge pilings and will readily bite crabs and shrimp. Snook are piling up in the river mouth now. Redfish are biting again on the flats. These N.E. winds blowing all the water out of the Bay make it easy to find them around the edges of the sand bars.
Buddy’s Bait and Tackle on the Courteney Campbell Causeway in Tampa - 813-287-1026 – Reds, trout and sheepshead are biting around the bridges this week. The best bait seems to be live shrimp. Some snook are still around the mouth of the creek. Fishing seems to be good on the flats just north of the boat ramp this week as well.
Bonnie’s Bait and Tackle in Clearwater - 727-446-2772- The snook are moving inside now and biting around the lighted docks at night. This cold snap will change that and move them toward the creeks and rivers now.
Trappman’s Bait and Tackle on Gandy Blvd in St. Petersburg - 727-579-1414- Sheepshead have been really chewing on fiddler crabs. Some pompano were still biting around both bridges as well. Some reds were biting around the 4th Street Bridge early in the week.
Don’s Dock on Madeira Beach - 727-391-3223- Spanish mackerel are just thick on the beaches and around the mouth of the pass.
Pass-a-Grille Bait and Tackle on St. Pete Beach - 727-360-6606- The anglers on our dock have caught a few nice flounder this week. Our offshore boats have brought in some grouper and Spanish mackerel. A few kings have been caught as well.
The Skyway Fishing Pier - 727-865-0668 and the south Skyway - 941-729-0117- Flounder, pompano, Spanish mackerel, grouper, redfish, and trout have been caught off the pier in the last few days. On the south side some nice pompano and a few grouper have all been caught today. Spanish mackerel have been in and out around the pier and some nice trout have been caught under the lights at night.

Folks, feel free to call any of the places in my report for more information, and be sure to tell them that you read about the fishing in their area in Capt. Charlie’s fishing report on the Internet.

If you want more information about fishing in the Tampa Bay area or wish to book a charter, simply e-mail me at captchas@flfish.com or if you wish to arrange a charter faster, call me at 727-546-7257.
