MUCC praises pro-family, safety "Hunter Heritage" legislationLast Friday, Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC) stood by State Sen. Randy Richardville to promote new legislation designed to ensure that aspiring youth hunters may join their moms and dads in enjoying this treasured Michigan pastime. Richardville announced the introduction of Senate Bill 1589, legislation that directs the Natural Resources Commission to establish a "Mentored Youth Hunting Safety Program" that would give minor youth currently unable to legally hunt an opportunity to enjoy the hunting experience with an adult mentor. Instead of relying on an arbitrary minimum hunting age, Senate Bill 1589 will allow youth to learn hunting safety and ethics through an NRC-approved Mentored Youth Hunting Safety Program.
This bill is a direct result of an MUCC Resolution introduced by Wildlife Committee Chair Rob Miller and passed at the 2010 Annual Convention. While most of the initial media related to the legislation has been positive, it is clear that people still don't understand the facts that support our stance that eliminating the minimum hunting age will actually contribute to SAFER hunting and INCREASE hunter recruitment and retention.
