Well, you can target them year around, you just can't keep them except during their season. We never keep reef donkeys around here, in SC. Everyone i've ever cut open was full of worms. I don't eat meat with worms.
I'd say, you've got the best of a reef donkey during the fight. They are a tough fish, and great for catch and release. [

Moral of the story, don't stop fishing because you can't keep a donkey; you can still catch them.
