Hi lonehunter,
I have to confess. Even thought this is the freshwater board, my comments might be appliable for certian situations. Party boat fishing on the Great Lakes for instance.
Fishing from the float tube allows me to fish whatever darn test I want to and the heck with everyone else. As I don't fish much freshwater, a lot of my boat fishing is on the open-party or charter boats. On party boats, I use the lightest line the captian will allow me to use. I also bring backup reels spooled with different test lines.
However, when I'm on a charter with fishing friends or fishing club buddies, I ask there indulgence in letting me again use what the heck I want to use. I don't think they squak because:
1) I'm a better than average light line angler.
2) I give them the fish I don't release if asked.
3) I serve as the locator (not bragging) for the boat many times as fish will hit my 'search' setup consistantly before others with heavier lines and conventional setups.
4) They've given up on trying to change me.
5) They've see me catch 20 pound yellows on 12lb test with less than one circle around the boat!
Moral of the story. You make the opprotunity to fish the way you want with experience! You choose which one of the above has the most weight! ha ha
