The only spincasters that come to mind are made by Daiwa and Zebco. Those typically have small spools and I think that is what TubeDude is referring too. Is this what you put your new line on? I made the mistake of buying a small spool spinning reel that was really intended for ice fishing but someone convinced me that it would be fine to use for soft water. The 6 lb test I was using was fine for vertical jigging but once you tried to cast the stupid thing it displayed the behavior you are describing. I retired it from soft water, used it to nuke crappie/gills/white bass/largemouth through the ice this past season and bought a bigger Okuma Epixor which I love.
