I have used WD 40 many times Ice Fishing. The most recent was a trip to Otter Creek. My dad was using WD 40 on an ice jig with a meal worm and was out fishing me (something that never happens). When he had caught a dozen to my 2 I gave in and tried using the WD 40 and sure enough I had soon caught up to him in the fish count. I have heard that when in water the oil substance in WD-40 appears just like fish oil or the oily substance that indicates food.
