overhand cast with a baitcaster

tried out my first baitcaster this past weekend, and caught some decent bass, so that was fun. I was fine with avoiding backlashes and fine with side arm stuff but boy I sucked big time with overhand casts, I would cast it pretty low and not the nice high long lob I wanted. having a tough time with release and wondering if that has to do with thumb placement, I was even tryin to release it much earlier and I just had the timing way off. any tips would be much appreciated, thanks.
