Xman, you're lucky to have been able to hunt on private ground all those years. I have only been able to elk hunt on private ground. (Cow hunts post season draw)
I have seen countless hunter on public ground but have rarely ever seem but one aor two while out hunting.
I noticed years ago where most people hunted in the areas I went into and stayed away from those areas. People generally hunt the easiest areas as possible and never strayed very from their camp whether on foot, 4X4, or quad.
The area I've hunted most folks stayed away from a long walk, I have never been bothered by it, and when I set my m,ind to a little hike on opening morning I was generally rewarded by a nice buck having no clue I was in the area, and a one-shot kill. Never even had to chase one.
Oh, yeah I could hear shots all around the area, but nothing close, and you could see how tense the deer were. but up in the high areas I was into I'd see elk, moose and tons of does before I'd see a buck or two.
And get this...after I shot my buck it was only an hour walk pulling out the animal and all down hill. I'd say by the crow flies less than 1/2 mile, ugly going up but fairly easy coming down even pulling out a deer.
