The material of the platforms is ABS. It's thin, but adequate, and in fact the flexing of the platform allows better finning performance over the overly rigid aluminum units in the first prototypes.
As for the flotation, I was considering some foam padding within the foot strap would do the trick - though padding really isn't necessary as it seems comfy enough with just the fabric itself. The good thing is that most of the materials used are very close in density to water so it could be that a large Thingamabobber may be enough to keep it afloat!
As for taking a beating, the operation image of these units is basically finning water and that's it. No walking on shore, no pushing off rocks or trees. The compromise to weight for making it bulletproof against what you might put Force fins through would be too great.
