"Gonna have to try for a 14 in perch myself!"
[#0000ff]I have seen a picture of a measured 15 inch perch from Willard. Came through the ice. That is usually the best time to find them schooling...in the clear water under the ice. The day I was fishing there was a bit of turbidity and that tends to scatter schooling fish.
Totally agree on the gizzard shad adversely affecting the quality of wipers. I always slice out the offending red tissue. But I have heard from a few folks who found the wipers less than appetizing and in virtually all cases they had no clue about the red flesh. I haven't noticed that much of a problem with the cats, but they have a more varied diet.
By the way, the fillets from those three perch I caught at Willard were some of the thickest and nicest perch fillets I have seen for some time. The six fillets filled my large 10" saute pan.
Here are couple of pics of some of my larger catches. One is a speck under 14". The other is a "bit less" than 15. Also adding a "cooler pic". I usually don't post those but since we share the trait of typically keeping a few fish for the table I thought you might appreciate it. It shows the relative sizes even better than the basket pic. The bigger cats are over 20 inches.
