I wont walk on any thing less that 4 inches.
2 inche will hold you but the problem rises when the entire lake dose not freeze evenly. so start with your spud and throw it in to the lake with the spud tied to your hand in a loop you can slip out of. and if it goes through in one chomp it is less than 2 inches of solid ice. water can be frozen but not frozen solid. an example of this you can find in your own freezer. you find popcycles tht you can bight right through. this is because there is no dencity to it. the material in a popcycle keeps it from freezing solid at 30* and needs to be colder to become dence enough to the point it becomes dence.
the lake has the same conditions. it is radiated from aboce with cold and radiated from beneith by wormth. iven though the wormth from below is only 42 degrees it is enough do cause havac if thre is any movement in the water at all from a spring or creek or even a river comming in from all the way across the lake cand cause boils in the body of water to keep the lake from freezing solid. I know of several places now that when the ice is a foot thick and the temp is below zerow and there is 6 inches of snow on top the ice. the a spring eats awey at the ice from below.
I found our the hard way. the rest of the day was miserable cause I was wet and my ride was no were around.
wind, underwater springs, exposure to the sun with certain material on the bottom.
my answer is 4 inches with a good heavy spud and if it goes through turn around and go right back the way you came and dont varie one way or the other.
iven though the ice may be 4 inches dose not mean the ice is safe. even if the ice is 25 inches dose not mean the ice is safe. always side on cosion.
there is a math matic formula to tell you what each inch of ice will hold you have no way of telling weather the ice you are looking at is solid or a popcycle with out a spud. and if you hit water in one good chomp you are in trouble
