You DEFINITELY want a transmission/clutch so you can start/stop it by controlling the speed of the engine. If not that sucker is gonna be spinning so fast it could kill you. Have you looked into an adapter for your old auger that could hook up to a hand-held, battery operated, drill? They do make them and I'm sure you could Google it.
