kentofnsl - Thanks for that info. It don't make lots of sense to me, but at least it's an answer I didn't have before.
I've never used corn or anything else to chum with. Not in fresh water anyway. I was always educated by the older guys in my family that chum was for out in the deep blue water (the Pacific) and was frowned upon (but not illegal) on the lakes and rivers I grew up around in California. But to put a couple or 3 kernals of sweet corn on a bait hook, sometimes with a home made dough ball, was pretty standard practice when I was much younger.
