BFT Traveling Fly Box
#27
Day two for the Traveling Fly Box and its second destination....the Box Canyon below Island Park Reservoir. Warmer weather today with the sun out and 50 degrees. On the way to the river I had a coyote run in front of the truck. Walking down to the river I jumped two Sandhill cranes. Started fishing a 2 PM and had to work hard for the first fish, a 14 inch rainbow. While standing in the river I watched a pair of ospreys carrying sticks to their new nest. The second fish came one hour later eating the same small pheasant tail nymph the first fish took. I was fishing it in tandem with a San Juan warm that drew little interest. I then switched to a wooly bugger and finished with two more rainbows that were in the 14-15 inch range. Just as I was getting ready to leave, a cow moose with her yearling stepped into the water for their evening drink. Left at 6PM with a total of 4 fish released. Not close to the numbers from yesterday but a most memorable afternoon thanks to the Traveling Fly Box getting me there. I plan on getting out again tomorrow but haven't decided on a destination yet.
