We've been spoiled here for a long time. I fished the Elk River in Ohio and its perfectly normal for another angler to come fish right next to you. Try back trolling for Kings on the Columbia, its a parking lot of boats on the river. Anglers on both coasts and Alaska fish in close proximity to each other. I think we will need to get more used to it. I don't mind outfishing the angler next to me.
