Higher octane only helps retard pinging/pre-detonation, it does ABSOLUTELY nothing to increase power.
BTU's are what equates to power. A gallon of ethanol has less btu's than regular gasoline. Therefore, a 10% mix of ethanol not only has less 'power' than a non-ethanol mix it also attracts water to the ethanol which creates major problems in a tank that the fuel sits in longer than normal. That is why cars dont see the problems like other power equipment sees.
High octane fuels are a waste of money if your engine will run properly on a lower octane fuel.
Diesel has more btu's than regular fuel, hence diesels being more 'powerful'.
Hope this helps?
