Using the narrow beam on a dual-beam transducer can help with interference if you are fishing close to other anglers on the ice. On depths over 35 ft, I prefer to use the narrow beam on my LX-5 in order to play nice with the other fishfinders. The narrow beam is also very helpful in Fish Lake if you are going after lake trout and you are fishing 80-100 feet. I've also found the narrow beam to be helpful if you are fishing in lakes with a lot of cover/brush since your finder sees less of the brush and therefore give you better target separation.
BTW, I own several flashers (5) and really like them a lot. My main unit is an LX-5 and the rest are used by my family members or fishing buddies who need/want to use one.
