Inflatable PFDs are ranked in a class that requires them to be worn to be valid. i.e., it doesn't count if it's n a locker or even draped around your seat. It has to be WORN to count.
Fortunately, they aren't hot, don't restrict movement much, and in general aren't even noticed once they're on.
I prefer the manual inflation type in my kayak, but can see why an auto-inflate one would be better in a power boat in case of being knocked unconscious. Note mine here: (Photo courtesy of TubeDude)
