The zerk on the end of the spindle is for forcing grease to the inner bearing. Way better system than the old spring loaded bearing buddy set-ups. Technically one can completely re-pack the bearings without ever taking the hub off with this set-up. (Not advised but "could" be done.) One just has to plug in the grease gun and pump it 20-40 times to force all the old grease out through the front.
"]

Wolf, I absolutely LOVE those EZ Lube Axles! I have them on my utility trailer ... ingenious! I use to wonder why they are not standard on boat trailers. I think I know why the bearing buddies are recommended in stead; with bearing buddies, the spring keeps internal pressure inside the hub. That internal pressure, I would think, keeps water from seeping in. Whereas the EZ Lube axles are just easy way to add clean lube throughout the hub system.
By the way, on those EZ Lube axles, I would think that some gentle turning of the wheel while pumping grease in would make sure that the bearings get completely lubed with fresh new grease.
