I use pipe foam insulation to make sure my rods float. It can be cut in thin enough strips so there is no interference with the line or rod action. Then tape it down between the reel seat and 1st eyelet, with package tape. Some people might think it looks dorky, though. I like it better than tethers, and it might be safer if you go overboard.
