I am comfortable with the Scotty system. You put the rod holders in the Y and turn them 90 degree so they cannot come out. Then they have nice rubber straps over the rod and reel to keep them secure.
I put a leash on the T. SHOULD I spring a leak. I grab the lease and T and pull all the rods with me.
I don't cast with a tether on, it is a obstruction.
