Twirlers = Steelhead that slowly drop down the river, struggling to stay upright, doing circles, slowly dying caused by an over load of Thiamine from eating to many Alewives (bait fish) in Lake Ontario which causes them to have a Vitamin B deficiency. This also causes the eggs to have a low success rate.
Twirlers were the steelhead that were dying of Vitamin B deficiency last year. Ive never heard that term for'm before, until I read the article. In my reply to the article, I figured I would use the authors word.
