[#0000FF]I used to use the PVC tube rod holders. Then I came up with the "quick-draw"...as in the attached pics. I make them from 1/2 to 3/4" PVC T joints. You can get 1/2 to 1" if you have larger rod handles. Then (as in the pic "Construction") you make 3 simple cuts, smooth it down and mount it.
These things make for quick and easy rod placement, and easy to just haul up and set the hook. And if a fish pulls down on them the harder they pull the more securely it holds the butt...as long as you are not pointing directly at the fish.
I have set them up for a few guys with toons, who also need to use the oars once in a while. I do not permanently screw them in place. I run a 3/4" screw into the female fitting at the bottom and then cut a notch in the bottom of the PVC shaft to fit over the screw. That holds it in place, keeping it from rotating out of position, but makes it easy to lift out if you are rowing.
Another option is to make two or three other "bases" around the front end to that you can move the holder to different spots if needed. But you should also have extra shaft and holder setups in case you lose one over the side during the heat of battle.
I don't know how I ever got by with any other rod holder design. I have used them with light rods, heavy rods and even with flyrods.
