I think there is no wrong answer, and it is very variable from angler to angler. I have a Marcum lx-5 and love it, and a camera and love it: each have their place depending on the water, depth and quarry.

If you are in the market, head out and try a few different options and see what you prefer. I am sure there are plenty of people on here that would meet up with you and show you their equipment.
