After reading the post about starting up the Catfish contest, decided I better get busy getting my gear together. So....................today I ordered the re-arm kits for my 2 auto inflating life vests, and a 3rd new vest to have on the Tin-Can when my 2 sons are with me. Soon as I get those re-arm kits, gonna take the 2 older vests to the indoor heated swimming pool in my apartment complex, and do a wet functional test. Inflate the vests with the old cylinders, make sure there are no leaks in them, then get them dried off good and replace the inflation cylinders with new.
Most of us will remember the loss of a fellow angler at Willard Bay 2 years ago. He was healthy as far as I know, and he normally wore his life jacket. But circumstances that I'm not sure if anyone has ever determined, conspired to result in his drowning. The one fact we all learned, he wasn't wearing a pfd. I don't know about the rest of the members here, but that one tragic incident hit home with me. Yes, I always carried the required number and type life jackets on my boats: because that's the law. Nope, I was not in the habit of wearing one 100% of the time, until the weather turned bad, because I grew up in the waters of southern California and considered myself a good swimmer. But NO swimmer is any good if he / she hits the water unconscious, or the cold water (which it was 2 years ago) quickly results in hypothermia.
SO............BFT'ers, friends I have met and known the last several years, and those I have not, for your sake, and your families sake, be sure your life jackets, whatever brand, or configuration you may prefer, are serviceable, on board your vessel, and most importantly, ON YOUR BODY, when your body is on the water.
I hope to see you on the water again this season, and maybe even be fortunate enough to fish with you, compete with and against you in the funnest fishin competition I have ever been a part of. The annual BFT Catfish Contest. [sly]
