Well, I had to try it to believe it, and youzguyz are right -- they are gone...at least for 2 of us Mon. evening, 5:00 to 8:30....there was one other tent off Skunk Pt. oops, Browning Pt. and he had 3 crappie in the 2 hours he had been there, so we at least thought we'd have a chance when things got dark.....didn't happen ... fish didn't show up in 44 Fow....that's about where he was too....when we left, there were still only our 2 tents on the whole lake, that I could see....everybody else seemed to know (I've been reading all the reports) but I just had to see for myself....4 total bites between us, and 0 hookups....time for Strawberry...Guluk...

I feel your pain. Saturday when my friend and I were trudging through that mess and trying to pull a sled I thought it would all be worth it when we start pulling up fish. The fish part never happened. I think I'm done with trips to Pineview until I can get on there in my kayak. Im excited to try and land a tiger in the kayak this year, not to mention fast action Crappie.

Squawminnow and Cu Hauler -- Yeah, I wish it weren't so, 'cuz the ice was still good, as well as the edges.... definitely was a 4" slush layer with about 5" of fresh snow also, but that part was doable...as long as you weren't heart-attack prone! ... we had to take 5 rest breaks going in, and twice as many on our way back out, and adding insult to our skunk, I stepped in somebody's (snowed over) 10" hole, so walked all the way back out with lots of water in one boot....The only good thing about this trip (besides sharing time with a good friend) was learning that my military "Mickey Mouse" boots really do work -- the insulation in that boot quickly warmed up the ice water, and my foot stayed warm all the way back to the truck, 'til I had to dump the water out and change to my driving boots.......just no reason for anyone drilling 10" holes anywhere, other than maybe the Gorge....my buddy also fell in one of those giant holes earlier this season up in Huntington Res......there we were just starting, so he was able to get dried off in his heated tent...Berry this Fri.

Terribly sorry you stepped in that hole and got wet but I use a 10" auger up there. I have a dang good reason too. Its the only auger I own and I have no interest in owning 2 of them. When I fish the Gorge gotta have a 10" auger in case I hook into a large Mac.

You know, I'm getting to be a pretty old guy, and can take a wet foot now and then, whether it's my fault or someone else's......but can you imagine trying to explain to someone's child out there, or even your own, if they went in your 10" hole? Think that child would want to go out ice fishing again? Just sayin'....

I can tell you that both my 8 yr old nephew and 4 yr old son have fallen into others ice holes before. They both still like to ice fish just fine. Unfortunately for your point both boys fell into 8" holes. My 4 yr old did it on our first trip of the season this year up at Pineview in said 8" hole. His right leg fell through that little 8" hole right up to his knee. Because I always come prepared we had extra socks, pants and boots. He was unhappy for a few minutes but we quickly addressed the situation and were back to having fun in no time at all. Your welcome to your opinion but I'm not made of money and 1 ice auger is what I have and what I"ll stay with.

Love my 10" auger as well, makes for less problems with losing fish due to snagging the bottom edge of the ice hole as well.
Large pike and musky look small when you bring them through a 10" hole.
Went through a 8" hole covered in snow this year at Willard. Surprised and couldn't be anticipated with the ice covered in fresh snow. Wet foot resulted. Part of the whole ice fishing deal I guess,,

TP and Allfish -- Sorry, but a 10" driller is just plain overkill, unnecessary, and dangerous to other fishers out there..of course I can see using it at a place like F.G. or maybe Fish Lake -- maybe for the pike if that's your target....people on those lakes/res. may need to suspect that some of you are drilling 10" holes, but again I'll say (of course, just IMO) that a 10" hole on other lakes/res. is overkill, unnecessary, and dangerous....but if you feel good about it....A big snake in the grass is NO problem -- 'til it bites YOU in the ass....I'd hate to be a little kid going in up to my crotch...

Dude a little kids 4" foot will fit into an 8" hole every bit as easy as it will into a 10" hole. (This is fact as Ive twice witnessed it first hand). The kid argument just isn't accurate and doesnt apply. Its being used to try and make people feel guilty. If you would like to purchase and donate an 8" auger to me I'd be happy to use it when chasing panfish. That is not all I target and I'm not going to purchase 2 expensive augers cause a few folks are over anxious about a non issue. I promise you just as many kids have got their feet wet in 8 " holes and near edges as they ever have in 10" holes. The arguments being made here are simply emotional opinion without fact or data to support.

No need to buy certain augers for certain lakes. I only have a 10" also and my kids have gone thru 8" holes and still get excited for ice fishing. Stepping in a hole is a risk you take when you step out on the ice.

Hey, wondering if anyone has seen those new 12" Augers that are out there? Things are sweet, I plan on picking one up soon.[bob ] You can set up a Jawjacker , fish your 2nd pole and have your transducer set up in one hole...
Seriously are we really complaining about ice hole sizes now?
In response to stepping in a hole...we've all done it before...to quote Clark Griswold "It's all part of the experience kids"
...and it is surely no more dangerous than an 8" hole.
Drill away fellers!

"Dude" I'm really glad you're so happy with the size of your hole....And I wish you, and your kids, and your nephews a lot of luck when they're anywhere near where you've drilled, or anyone else with a 10" drill....I've expressed my opinion (IMO) and I've seen the results, and so have you...No Way you can convince me that it's okay for a child (or an old guy) or anyone else for that matter to go down someone's oversized ice hole, when that 10" hole isn't appropriate for 99+percent of our lakes/res. here in Utah.....IMO...Guluk, and good fishing.....
